Our estimates combine publicly available information, historical records, documented chess experience, and community estimates to create an approximate rating.
What does “Elo by today’s standards” mean?
For people who lived before modern Elo ratings existed, we estimate what their chess rating might have been if they played competitively under today’s rating system.
Are these official Elo ratings?
No. These are unofficial estimates created for comparison and entertainment. Unless someone has an official recorded rating, the number shown should be treated as an approximation rather than a verified rating.
How does the community estimate work?
Users can submit their own guesses for a person’s Elo. We aggregate those guesses to create a community estimate, which can be compared with our estimated rating.
What do the Elo ranks mean?
See the Elo ranks table under “What is an estimated Elo rating?” — under 400 beginner, up through 2000+ master. Higher number means stronger estimate.
